Planning is underway for an 8 day tour designed to give participants a taste of one of the most historic as well as cosmopolitan cities in the world: London, England.

cathedrals, markets, theatre in a tour structured to offer some flexibility for your personal interests and a knowledgeable guide to help you navigate an amazing city with so many treasures to discover.

We expect to offer the tour in Fall 2011, final details and costs available soon! Your guide: Kelley Broome is a Knoxville native and alumna of Carson-Newman College

and University of Tennessee Knoxville. She attended CNC’s London Semester study abroad program in 1987, and returned to London as a graduate assistant with the program in 1991. Now an international education professional, she works for American InterContinental University London as a member of their US based student recruitment team, helping college students study abroad in London.

 This tour: The Heart of London tour is designed to give participants a taste of one of the most historic as well as cosmopolitan cities in the world. Sample historic sites, museums, cathedrals, markets, theatre in a tour structured to offer some flexibility for your personal interests and a knowledgeable guide to help you navigate an amazing city with so many treasures to discover. This tour will utilize public transportation (subway, bus) and require moderate mobility, as London is a city for walking. Pack your comfortable shoes! The goal of this tour is to appeal to the traveler that wants the security of a guided tour, flexibility, and a good value. There will be other free or a-la-carte options to appeal to any budget for those on the tour who want to be more independent. This tour is not designed for young children.

What’s Included: Pre-departure orientation information, accommodation and breakfast in hotel with Central London location (single or double, see pricing), bus tour and London transport travel card, afternoon tea, theatre ticket, admission to Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London Eye, cell phone while on ground in London.

Day 1 (Saturday) – travel from Knoxville to London overnight

Day 2 (Sunday)- arrive in London, travel to Hotel and orientation

 Walking tour of neighborhood points of interest, orientation to local drugstore, market for incidentals/snacks/gifts, affordable restaurants, tube station, other points of interest.

Dinner together as a group for those who want to go, dutch treat.

Day 3 (Monday) – History and Famous Sites Day

Westminster Abbey tour, evensong service

Return to hotel for dinner on own, evening Historic Pubs of London walk

Day 4 (Tuesday) – Museum Day (Day 1 travelcard)

Orientation to London Tube/Bus

British Museum (home of the Elgin Marbles, Rosetta Stone and other treasures of the world), British Library (home of one of 4 copies of the Magna Carta, Jane Austen's diary, Beatles manuscripts)

Lunch stop

Victoria and Albert Museum (museum of Decorative Arts)

Return to hotel for quick dinner and an evening at the Theatre (choice of musical or The Globe, booked in advance)

Day 5 (Wednesday) – History Day (Day 2 travelcard)

Tower of London, home of the Crown Jewels (3 hours)

Lunch stop

National Portrait Gallery

Browse and afternoon tea at National Gallery, National Dining Room

OR optional afternoon on own with tea allowance, recommendations

Evening –dinner on own, consults for day 6 and 7

Day 6 (Thurday)– Exploration Day (Day 3 travelcard)

Explore the city and your personal interests on your own, with planning help from your guide. Guests that need more support may be accompanied by guide as required.

Fashion tour (Camden Market, Regent Street, Carnaby Street, Savile Row, Selfridges)

Fine Art tour (Wallace Collection, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, National Gallery)

History tour (Museum of London, Imperial War Museum, Churchill’s War Rooms)

Royalty tour (Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Hampton Court)

Parks and Markets of London tour (Regent’s Park, Hyde Park, Green Park, Borough Market, Camden Market, Covent Garden)

Rock and Roll tour (Beatles Walking tour, Carnaby Street, Rock and Roll legends tour)

Tourist London tour (Madame Tussaud’s, Jack the Ripper tour, London Dungeon, London Zoo, Olympic Village, Harry Potter tour)

Optional Borough Market (HUGE farmer's market) lunch with guide – dutch treat

Return to James Street (full of affordable restaurants) for dinner on own, given travel directions back to hotel and suggestions for shopping on Oxford Street (stores open late on Thursdays). Fish and Chips night for those interested. Group meeting point for those not comfortable with self guided transportation.

 

Day 7 (Friday)- Exploration Day, as Day 6 (Day 4 travelcard)

Optional day trip to Greenwich or Windsor based on vote of those interested, weather (additional fees apply)

Farewell to London group dinner

Day 8 (Saturday) – breakfast, depart for airport, return flight to Knoxville
